88 Elmira Street  (1991)
This all instrumental solo album reveals Gatton as a man who could, and did, play everything - jazz, country, blues, folk and swing. Most of the tracks here are originals, the exceptions being a John Martyn cover, Charlie Patton's "Funky Mama," "The Simpsons Theme," and a heart-wrenching cover of the Beach Boys' "In My Room".
88 Elmira St. is one of those albums that will be instantly liked by anyone who enjoys good instrumental music. It nods in so many musical directions that it's hard to single one particular strand out. There's blues, jazz, funk, country, bluegrass, swing, '50's-style rock and roll, and all these styles could be found in one song!! As for the songs themselves, there is a longevity that will have many returning for a second listen. The toe-tapping rock'n'roll showcase of "Elmira St. Boogie", the sleazy jazz of "Harlem Nocturne", and the muted, and ever so catchy "Quiet Village" are a few of our favorites.
